March 14

On March 14—Albert Einstein’s birthday—math and history buffs can raise a piece of pie (dessert &/or pizza) to Pi (π) Day, an international celebration of one of math’s most famous constants: the irrational, never-ending Pi (π) pronounced “pie” (3.14159 . . .).

  • Supposedly, the San Francisco Exploratorium physicist, Larry Shaw, invented the day in 1988.
  • Congress declared it an official U.S. national holiday in 2009.
  • “Pennsylvania Dutch Shoofly Pie was created to celebrate US centennial in 1876, with some claiming that it is ‘more American than’ apple products.”

Celebrate Pi Day wherever you are and however you like.

  • Many people participate in a baking pies or pizzas or cheesecake with friends and family OR as part of a contest OR feast event.
  • Most individuals celebrate by partaking in the deals offered by some pizza, cheesecake, &/or dessert pie restaurants of their culinary dishes.
